Grandma Hansen and the Peas
by her daughter Ilda Hansen Colby

One spring morning Mother had worked hard preparing the soil for the planting of her annual crop of peas. She finished the last row, placed the seed bag over the stick at the end of the row and went into the house. A short while later she noticed a red-combed rooster strutting by her pea bed. When she examined the area she found that this cock had eaten all of her planted seeds. "That villain will not get away with this" mother thought. Quick as a flash she grabbed the rooster, beheaded him, stuck him in boiling water, plucked off his feathers, cut him open, and sure enough, there was her crop of precious seeds. Mother replanted the seeds and cooked the fowl for dinner.
